The 2009 Lent course was entitled 'These three ... Faith, Hope and Love'. It was a 'York Course', based on 1 Corinthians 13. There were five sessions.
1 Believing and trusting
What does it mean to have faith and how do we come to faith? Is faith a gift or is it accessible to all? What is believing about? Is there a difference between 'believing that' and 'believing in'? And is trusting the same as believing or does it demand more? How much do we need to 'know' and how much will we never 'know', but need to take on trust?
2 The peace of God
Faith doesn't remove doubts and difficulties. Life brings challenges to faith and the search for truth always leaves more questions than answers. A simple faith is a source of strength for many, but if it's a 'brittle' faith is can easily be broken by circumstance. Prayer often expresses our faith. It sustains our relationship with God, rather than delivering everything we ask for.
3 Faith into love
Love means lots of different things and the New Testament uses a variety of words to express its meaning. Agape love is demanding and often requires self-sacrifice. From its history, the Church can tell many heroic stories of such love. How is agape love expressed in church communities today? Is it properly focussed on those who need it most? Must it always welcome or are there times when it must exclude?
4 The greatest of these
Love isn't always easy. At times it needs to be an act of will rather than an outpouring of the heart. A sense of God's love can be an inspiring religious experience, yet most who have known the presence of God's love have known its absence too. God's love can be found in loving relationships and also in the beauty of creation and in the struggle for justice.
5 All shall be well
How hopeful are we of that which is to come? To what extent can we 'be' hopeful even when we don't 'feel' hopeful? If 'that which is to come' is the abundant life, what does that comprise? If it is life in the next world, what do we think that will be like? To what extent is our Christian hope dependent upon the resurrection of Jesus?
